Job Description – Indirect Tax Manager

Mission of the Role:

The Indirect Tax Manager will lead the development of a centralization indirect tax function; the selection and implementation of sales and use tax software and the selection of the associated service provider; and ensure indirect tax collection, payment and filing obligations are met. The areas of indirect tax accounting and tax compliance for Apex Service Partners and its entities include sales and use tax, real estate, personal property, unclaimed property and other tax matters. This leader will help drive the ethos for how the indirect tax accounting and compliance organization runs.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead the centralization of a dispersed indirect tax function and propose, establish and implement policies and processes while ensuring the Company meets its tax collection, payment and filing obligations
  • Provide leadership on the selection and implementation of sales and use tax software and the selection of the associated service provider for sales and use tax compliance
  • Develop and manage the organization’s compliance calendar for indirect taxes, ensuring accurate and timely filing and payment of all applicable taxes
  • Work closely with regional accounting and business departments to ensure information for tax compliance is obtained accurately and efficiently, enhancing current processes for future state processes
  • Oversee the analysis, review and filing of required returns, tracking associated due dates and payments
  • Understand indirect tax risks and exposures utilizing knowledge of tax laws, court decisions, and administrative pronouncements to ensure compliance; ability to identify tax-savings opportunities; and make recommendations for appropriate accruals as necessary
  • Manage invoices and bills associated with annual returns and renewals, ensuring prompt receipt and payment
  • Research, track and resolve any issues or discrepancies arising from indirect tax notices, providing resolution and/or guidance as necessary
  • Maintain complete and audit-ready indirect tax files, ensuring all supporting documents are accurate
  • Design, document, implement and maintain internal controls to effectively manage financial risk
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors to ensure successful engagement; provide all requested schedules, information and support as needed
  • Research indirect tax requirements for new locations or acquisitions, coordinating with relevant departments to ensure compliance
  • Participate in estimating and monitoring annual cash taxes, providing essential documentation and analysis
  • Contribute to team culture and effort by accomplishing related results as needed

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 7+ years of prior indirect tax experience
  • Strong experience in a similar role, currently operating at a manager level
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; JD, CPA or equivalent designation preferred
  • Multi-state experience required, including experience managing internal and external audits
  • Experience leading, organizing and developing a centralized team
  • Experience coordinating efforts with a disparate internal accounting team
  • Strong accounting experience and demonstrated ability to lead / drive processes to ensure they meet compliance requirements, internal controls are effective, are highly automated, efficient, in accordance with GAAP and audit ready
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and tax software implementations a plus
  • Strong ability to communicate accounting and financial information into common language
